Senior C&I Underwriter - Remote in NY Metro - $140K+

Position Summary:

This senior position in the Commercial Credit Underwriting is responsible for detailed research and credit analysis of complex credit requests. The incumbent must possess comprehensive knowledge of credit and risk analysis, credit rules, structuring credits, regulations, and documentation, with the ability to exercise independent judgment within established Underwriting Guidelines and Credit Policy. The role involves collaborating with Commercial Loan Officers on customer calls and deal structuring, demonstrating leadership in training less experienced staff, and handling complex assignments with high relationship exposure under Executive Leadership and Credit Committee Approval Authority (Level 8 & 9). Additionally, the incumbent will take on key responsibilities outside of credit-related work, including third-party vendor management, reporting, and special projects.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Prepare loan approvals, annual reviews, credit analysis for new requests, modifications, and short-term extensions of existing loans.

  • Accompany Commercial Loan Officers on customer and prospect calls, participating in discussions regarding the creditworthiness of proposed loan requests.

  • Conduct third-party research, including industry reports, personal credit reports, and real estate analysis with market assessments.

  • Prepare reports and handle special assignments.

  • Assist in third-party vendor management responsibilities.

Skills & Training:

  • Thorough knowledge of underwriting, credit analysis, commercial loan structure, and regulatory guidance.

  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to identify strengths and mitigate risks.

  • Strong knowledge of commercial real estate lending, including investment, owner-occupied, and some construction.

  • Proficient in Commercial & Industrial lending, including debt service coverage, cash flow, A/R and A/P, WIP, Borrowing Base Certificates, and construction budgets.

  • Strong computer skills, including experience with loan origination software and MS Office applications (specifically MS Word and Excel).

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

  • Ability to prioritize multiple projects and complete them on time.

  • Ability to conduct meetings, meet with customers, effectively present information, and respond to questions from peers, auditors, and various levels of management.

  • Strong comprehension of accounting practices, including balance sheets, income statements, equity reconciliation, and cash flows.

  • Confidence in credit underwriting with the ability to mentor and train Credit Analyst III.

  • Under some supervision, ability to correspond, manage, and in certain cases negotiate with third-party vendors.

EDUCATION

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or Economics. MBA preferred. Formal credit training or higher banking education (e.g., Graduate School of Banking, Stonier, etc.).

WORK EXPERIENCE

  • 5 or more years in Commercial Banking.

LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATES

  • Certification in Credit Risk or Credit Management preferred.
